Was an organized armed body of lawless men to resist the laws, that they had burned houses, destroyed personal property &c., wherefore be called upon all well disposed partners of the territory with the civil & military officers to rally & support the sheriff in executing the laws. He also call on the President to aid Woodson, the Gov’s Secretary. In the meantime wrote to Gen. Eastin to call out the Platte County Rifle Company, but not to implicate the Gov. The occasion was deemed a favorable one by Atchison & Stringfellow to call out their forces as volunteers to Aid Gov. Shannon, but virtually to destroy Lawrence, the place above all others, hated by these Pro-Slavery [Probigamists.?]
At Liberty Mo.they broke into the State Arsenal & helping themselves to guns, cannon &c. rushed eagerly into the territory swearing most dreadfully that they would burn Lawrence, drum the d___d Abolitionists out of the Territory. They were joined by the few rabid Proslavery men here in the territory & assembled to the number of several hundred at Franklin below L.--& as many more at Lecompton above. They were armed with revolvers, double barrel gun rifles & Bowie knives, with several cannon Being mostly [xxx] There Scouting parties were scattered all around to cut off communications between Lawrence & the surrounding country. In the meantime the inhabitants of Lawrence seeing the gathering storm were not idle. They organized military companies elected Dr Robinson General of their forces, and Col. Lane, a distinguished officer of the Mexican War, Brigadier Gen. They also sent expressions to the chief towns of the territory asking assistance, & to the states to give a true version of their acts & conditions.
In the most important towns their summons was answered by pouring into Lawrence their volunteers & military companies. Under the drill of their experienced officers they quickly had the bearing of experienced veterans. The town was also strengthened by fine strong redoubts, some of them circular, capable of holding 100 or 150 men each. These men so constructed as to command the approach in every direction & any assailants would [xxx] the face of Sharpes rifles commanding the whole space for the radius of a mile, have found it a worse than [xxx] of undertaking to have taken it. At this stage of affairs, another cold blooded murder was committed. A Mr. Barber & two others returning home from Lawrence were fired upon by a party of twelve border ruffians & he was killed.
