Miss. Adams,
Dear Madam, your letter of the 6th to Miss. Remington, was handed me yesterday, with the request that I answer it.
As to slaves being brot into this region & kept here any length of time, I do not know of any but one. and that was a hired one. A merchant from Kansas City brot with a colored boy some 8 or 10 years old, whom he did not own, but had hired, & kept him here one summer. An Indian – Baptiste – an interpreter & agent for

some small tribes – lived where Paola now is, - owned a colored woman.
These are all that I know of being held for any length of time in this region.
Slaveholders & pro-slavery were afraid to bring them here.
