Friend Higginson
I rec’d your letter in reference to the Fogg case and am exceedingly sorry at it’s present appearance, but the best must be done. I have had to sell my last Cow and last pig, to live thru the winter altho of the improved breeds. The National Aid Committee have had nothing for months altho what we did get which was some flour and some little articles for the children came very useful, and the Central committee have [fissiled?] out. I never ask’d them for anything since Arny came. Such questions I have heard ask’d Ladies, by their Agents that was perfectly infamous, but enough I have had emigrants just arrived with Capitol, desiring to purchase my claim but I still hold out, hoping something will turn up. I fear if I sell the money would go and I altho one of the first have

nothing left A large family take so much to support it even frugaly, but spring will soon come. Send the papers back by some reliable person coming to Lawrence, you will have heard that the ruffians call’d an indignation meeting at Lecompton and finding the majority was against them commenced to shoot when Sherrad their Bully late of Virginia was shot and died in a day or two, also a Mr Shepard Store Keeper in that place, rather liberal Mr Hunting of Lawrence Free State and Mr Porterfield of same place last three will get well we expect trouble right off the Bogus officers are preparing to assess the property in Lawrence previous to taxing their election laws just pass’d – are worse than before in fact every [revenue?] and officer is appointed by & thro the Bogus Legislature I now see nothing but revolution for us but Dr. Robinson as Gov and Roberts as Leut. Gov have greatly injured our Cause by leaving the Cause and speculating at Quindaro and Wyandott etc etc
Yours truly
John Doy
