Untitled Document Boston Sept. 9/ 59.

Friend Conway.

Somebody is busily engaged in attempts to create a prejudice against you in this community & to excite a suspicion in the minds of your best friends.

Among other changes, one, which would be the most likely to prove injurious here, is that during the late electioneering grogeries were kept open at your expense, where persons might go, & did go and imbibe freely without money & without price, thereby injuring the good name & fame of the place and seriously damaging the cause of Temperance. Both Howe & Stearn among others have called on me in relation to the charges. I caution to receive them cum grano salis [with a grain of salt], or rather cum massa salis.

By the way Simpson is in this section actively engaged in behalf of the Monumental College. It is understood from him that the other College enterprise has fallen through. This is a pity considering how much time & labor were devoted to it, & with so fair a prospect of success. Remember me to Hinton, & say that I believe Redpath has arrived at N. Y. from his second Hayti [Haiti] trip.

Yrs truly

T. H. Webb
