Cummings, F.M.

El Mendero Nov. 13 th 1859

S.N. Wood Esqr

Dear Sir

I have not written sooner because I had no opportunity of

sending a letter to the office, and as I have nothing very favorable to report, I presume you will get this soon enough. The vote cast was very light, scarcely any interest being felt in the Election, and the ill timed article in your issue of Oct 31 st on Jim Lane -pretty effectivelly “cooked” your prospects in Madison County. In this Township you received 12 votes Britton 18 and Huffaker 7. In Hartford Wood 17 Huffaker 5, Britton 0. Verdigries Wood 9 Britton 16 Huffaker 2 footing up as follows Wood 38 Britton 34 Huffaker 14. Passott received 76 votes and Johnson 5 in the County. Your article on Lane lost you at least 20 votes most of which went to Britton and you did better than I supposed you would after I read that article. I still hope you may be elected, but if Britton got any votes in I fear the result. Britton, I think has become satisfied that politics is not his vocation, and I presume he will never again aspire to a seat in the Legislature. At a Convention held in El Mendero on Friday Nov 4, Geo H. Lillie and A.K. Hawks were nominated to represent the County in the Legislature. I understand you have received the nomination for State Senator. Being a Lane man myself and knowing your opposition to him I cannot wish you success, and presume it would not avail anything if I did. Porter did you considerable injury here as [xxx] your participation in the Council Grove affair. I believe I have nothing else of interest to communicate.

Yours Respectfully

H. M. Cummins.
