Broadside, "Fremont & Dayton Meeting" Author: Buffalo City Town Association Date: September 11, 1856 This broadside advertised a meeting of "the friends of Fremont and Dayton, and all opposed to the Cincinnati Platform and the extension of Slavery into Free Kansas". John C. Fremont was the newly-formed Republican party's candidate for the Presidency in 1856; William L. Lewis was his running mate. The pair favored admitting Kansas to the Union as a free state, but did not support the Cincinnati Platform, which would put the issue of slavery to a popular vote in Kansas Territory.
