Letter, N. McCracken to Judge [John A.] Halderman Author: McCracken, Nelson Date: September 4, 1856 Writing from the "Missouri River" on September 4, 1856, Nelson McCracken, reportedly one of Leavenworth's leading free-state businessmen, asked J. A. Halderman if it would be safe for him "to Return to Leavenworth to do Business or Settle my unfinished Business." McCracken and several others had recently been forced to leave the city for St. Louis by proslave partisans there, and they petitioned Governor John W.
