Minutes, First Meeting of Territorial Central Committee of the Free State Party

The first meeting of the Free State Party's territorial central committee was convened in Lawrence on September 23, 1858, with, according to the minutes, the following individuals in attendance: James Blood, temporary chair; P. H. Townsend; W. F. M. Arny, and James M. Winchell, along with J. C. Douglas who held proxy for John McKee. Among other things, the committee resolved to nominate Samuel W. Greer for territorial superintendent of public instruction.

Letter, Tho. Ewing Jr to Dear Sir [J. M. Winchell]

This letter from Ewing in Leavenworth to James M. Winchell at "Wyandott" addressed a question regarding real estate in the latter's city and the upcoming Osawatomie convention for the founding of the Republican Party in Kansas. Ewing believed the "opposition" would "have no difficulty in carrying the county: but if the party is badly managed at Osawattomie [sic], & at subsequent conventions, our county is surely gone and probably the Territory."

Vaughan, editor of the Leavenworth Times, wrote this letter soon after the convention convened to introduce and lend his support to three "Delegates elect from Southern Nebraska to the Kansas Convention." They had convinced Vaughan that efforts toward annexation were not just more Democratic politics.

In the midst of the convention, a "Rienzi" of Wyandotte wrote to convention president James M. Winchell concerning a potential threat to Winchell's life. The ill-will toward Winchell had been sparked by the convention's "silly and ill advised move . . . To deprive Indians, (who by treaty stipulation have acquired the rights of citizenship) of the right of suffrage with negroes."
