Connecticut Kansas Colony Record Book

The colony was formed in New Haven, Connecticut, with the intent that members would migrate to Kansas Territory in the spring of 1856. This book listed members of the colony and the minutes contained information about the activities of the colony for its formation, the trip to Kansas, selecting a town site, through the decision to dissolve it in favor of the Wabaunsee Company, which was charged with organizing the town of Wabaunsee, Kansas Territory. The content, while not including information about the discussions of issues, contained a great deal of information about the formal actions of the colony. The group was sometimes referred to as the Beecher Bible and Rifle Colony. The early minutes contained mentions of the purchase of arms.

Certificate, Lecompton Town Company, one share

Date: July 10, 1856
William L. Blair was issued this certificate for one share of stock in the Lecompton Town Company on July 10, 1856, signed by the company's secretary, Samuel J. Jones, notorious sheriff of Douglas County. The certificate was apparently transferred at some point to J. A. Halderman.

Agreement for the establishment of the Quindaro Town Company

The document outlined the details related to the establishment of the Quindaro Town Company. This letter related to an earlier one Tuttle wrote to Alfred Gray. He had made arrangements to purchase land from Guthrie and suggested he get the money from Gray or write to Tuttle directly. Mr. Tuttle expressed his hopes for the development of Quindaro but also his fears if the land falls into the hands of non-resident speculators. He also stated that any association of Mr. S. N. Simpson with the town would injure its prospects.

Letter, Tho. Ewing, Jr., to Dear Hamp [H. B. Denman]

Date: July 25, 1857
From Leavenworth, Ewing wrote to a law and business partner, Hamp Denman, who was working on some possible land acquisitions in the Osaukee (Ozawkie?) vicinity. Ewing provided some specific instruction regarding a number of potential deals, including the "fraction . . . Adjoining the Kaw land directly opposite Topeka. My sole object in buying would be to have a RR [railroad] depot on the land, & lay out a town."
