Surveying Equipment

Date: 1845-1855
Albert D. Searl used this equipment to survey Kansas Territory town sites in 1854. Lawrence was surveyed on Sept. 25th and Topeka on Dec. 20th. Searl's efforts to set town limits for free-staters in Lawrence were met with violence from pro-slavery forces nearby. Searl would later survey Manhattan, Osawatomie, Burlington, & El Dorado.

The Vote on the Constitution

This article, printed in the Kansas Freeman newspaper, gave a preliminary count of the votes cast in the election to ratify the Topeka Constitution. The other two issues on the ballot were whether or not slaves should be excluded from the territory, and whether or not the territory should have a general banking law. The returns from Lawrence, Topeka, and Tecumseh are all listed, but not all the returns had been tallied.

Journal of Franklin Loomis Crane

This journal, compiled by Franklin Loomis Crane, details the workings of the Topeka Association during 1856 and 1857. The trustees of the association appointed him chairman and businessman of the association. Some entries are mainly composed of the minutes from town association meetings, while others are listings of those settlers who applied for town lots. Crane also writes of his daily work for the association, including tidbits about the weather, etc.

Proclamation, Results of the Free State Election

Date: March 7, 1856
This proclamation, published in the Kansas Daily Tribune on March 7, 1856, announced to the public the results of the election for senators and representatives in the Topeka legislature. These members of the free state legislature had been asked to meet in Topeka on March 4, 1856 (three days earlier). The proclamation was issued by James Lane and Joel Goodin.
