Letter, A. H. Reeder to J. A. Halderman

In this letter to Halderman from former territorial governor A. H. Reeder at Westport mentioned a new assessment of $5 per share for Tecumseh's 640 acre Wyandot Float. He also discussed the erection of a court house with bricks that had been intended for a hotel.

The Vote on the Constitution

This article, printed in the Kansas Freeman newspaper, gave a preliminary count of the votes cast in the election to ratify the Topeka Constitution. The other two issues on the ballot were whether or not slaves should be excluded from the territory, and whether or not the territory should have a general banking law. The returns from Lawrence, Topeka, and Tecumseh are all listed, but not all the returns had been tallied.

Letter, H. H. Williams and others, to Rev. Sir [Samuel Adair]

H. H. Williams wrote from Tecumseh, where he was imprisoned along with seven other suspects in the Pottawatomie massacre, informing Rev. Samuel Adair of their situation. The letter is also signed by the seven other prisoners--William Partridge, Jason Brown, S. W. Kilbourne, John Brown Jr., S. B. Morse, Jacob Benjamin, and P. D. Maness. He indicated that they were charged with high treason. He also reported on John Brown, Jr.'s health. Williams asked Adair to try to raise some funds for their legal defense as they had hired a lawyer.

Expense Account, Martin Stowell to Worcester Committee

This expense sheet, along with the attached memorandum, was written by Martin Stowell for the Worcester Committee in Massachusetts. Stowell had been functioning as the head of an emigrant company originating out of Massachusetts. The sheet provided a detailed listing of the cash he received as well as the cash he expended. His purchases included various foodstuffs, carpentry tools, cooking and eating utensils, and medicine. He also used some of his money to pay for repairs on wagons, etc. The attached memorandum was addressed to "Dear H" (Thomas Wentworth Higginson). It provided further explanation of the account sheet and gave news from the Massachusetts party.

Letter, E. Hoogland to Thos. N. Stinson, Esq.

Date: July 6, 1856
Edward Hoogland, a resident of Tecumseh, KT who was visiting his family in New York, described a meeting with Governor Wilson Shannon in St. Louis concerning territorial politics. Hoogland displayed a pro-slavery perspective in his comments on Kansas affairs. He described efforts to encourage settlement in Kansas Territory, especially Tecumseh, and to promote economic development in the territory. He mentioned an acquaintance who hoped to establish a sawmill and a gristmill in the territory.
