Pamphlet, Report of Samuel W. Greer, Territorial Superintendent of Common Schools
Authors: Greer, Samuel W
Date: December 30, 1858
Samuel Greer, having been appointed Territorial Superintendent of Public Instruction by the Free State Party's Central Committee only four months before, reported on the status of the public education system in the Territory. Greer emphasized that perfection should not be anticipated as K.T. had little financial revenue to contribute at that time. He proposed dividing the school system by municipal townships and sub-districts for easier management. Greer did however find praise for the school in Lawrence, relating that "the best order prevails. . .the scholars. . .are advancing rapidly in their studies", and referring to the school as example to "awaken a spirit of generous emulation in other parts of the Territory."

Letter, H. F. Parker to Mr. Hiram Hill
Authors: Parker, Henry F.
Date: January 5, 1859
Henry Parker wrote from Lawrence, Kansas Territory, to Hiram Hill in Massachusetts. Parker reported the amount of city, country, township, institutional, and school taxes that Hill would owe. He told Hill he would pay the city tax for now, and wait to hear from him regarding the others. Parker observed that current sales of lots were slow, but that he had received an offer on one of Hill's lots.

Corporation tax bill and letter, C. E. Blood to Hiram Hill
Authors: Blood, C.E.
Date: March 20, 1859
C. E. Blood wrote from Manhattan, Kansas Territory, to Hiram Hill in Massachusetts. Evidently, Hill had responded to Blood's previous letter with a list of his Manhattan properties. Blood had obtained the current values and tax rates for each lot while inquiring about the comparative value of the two men's town lots. A house had inadvertently been constructed on Hill's lot, instead of on the lot adjacent to his, as was intended, and Blood wanted to trade lots with Hill.

Letter, I. T. Goodnow to Dear Br. [Joseph] Denison
Authors: Goodnow, Isaac T., 1814-1894
Date: May 16, 1859
Isaac Goodnow wrote from his travels in New England to Joseph Denison. Goodnow was concerned that the finances of the College were being handled carelessly, as he had received word that city taxes had been paid on College lots when it was his understanding they were not even eligible to be taxed. He also stressed that the building supply accounts be kept organized. Goodnow included checks amounting to $150 with his letter to Denison.
