Letter, A. H. Reeder to J. A. Halderman

In this letter from Washington, D.C., dated January 14, 1857, Reeder wrote at length of a visit with W. H. Russell of Leavenworth (William H. Russell of Russell, Majors & Waddell) who believed the business climate was improving and that Reeder's lots were safe. Russell advised Reeder not to sell anything until value increased and volunteered to help Reeder reclaim the personal papers he lost during the Sack of Lawrence. Reeder thought Russell's help might be useful, since "Russell is so undoubtedly sound on the goose that he can afford to ask for them."

A. H. Reeder gave his "Power of Attorney" to John A. Halderman, who had served him faithfully in various capacities since 1854, via this notarized, handwritten document dated April 27, 1857. It specifically detailed what this means in terms of the property holdings Reeder had in KT, etc."

Agreement, between Pomeroy and Theodore Hyatt

"This agreement made this 29th day of June 1857 Between Samuel C. Pomeroy of the City of Atchison Kansas Territory. . .and Theodore Hyatt of the City of New York" addressed the conveyance of certain portions of city lots in Atchison and other land to the latter, as well as "one half of said Pomeroy's interest in the Squatter Sovereign," etc. In exchange Pomeroy received several thousand dollars.

Letter, A. Tuttle, Buffalo, New York, to Abelard Guthrie

This letter related to an earlier one Tuttle wrote to Alfred Gray. He had made arrangements to purchase land from Guthrie and suggested he get the money from Gray or write to Tuttle directly. Mr. Tuttle expressed his hopes for the development of Quindaro but also his fears if the land falls into the hands of non-resident speculators. He also stated that any association of Mr. S. N. Simpson with the town would injure its prospects.

Letter, Thos. J. Marsh to George L. Stearns, Esq.

Date: July 24, 1857
Agent Thomas Marsh, Mass. State Kansas Committee, wrote another of his frequent and detailed letters to George Stearns on July 24, 1857, describing the census and other preparations that were being made for the upcoming election (most importantly, the legislative election in October of that year). Of special interest were the activities of Jim Lane by the Free State Convention to organize militarily for "the protection of the Ballot Boxes."
