Letter, William A. Hammond to Dear Sir [Gov. A. H. Reeder]

Dr. Hammond, the secretary of the Pawnee town company, was post surgeon at Fort Riley in 1854-55. He wrote from the "Catholic Mission" (undoubtedly the Potawatomi mission at St. Mary's) to inform the governor that he had "just purchased from Mr. Wilson one whole interest (10 shares) and from Lt. Hunter one half an interest (5 shares)" for Reeder--total cost, $1,800.00.

Certificate, Pawnee Association, one share

Date: December 20, 1854
This printed certificate for "one share" in the Pawnee Association is made out to Thomas Sherwood and signed by W. R. Montgomery, president, and William A. Hammond, secretary. William R. Montgomery was a colonel in the U.S. Army in command at Fort Riley at the time; Hammond was the post surgeon. The area that was Pawnee is now on Fort Riley.

Letter, J. [John] W. Whitfield to My Dear Sir [J. A. Halderman]

Date: February 25, 1855
John W. Whitfield was a proslave man from Tennessee who would subsequently move to Texas to fight for the Confederacy. He was a congressional delegate for Kansas Territory when he wrote this letter to J. A. Halderman from Washington, D.C., regarding pending legislation "regulating town sites." It had been difficult to build a consensus for this law, but Whitfield hoped it would pass the current session.

Town Share Certificate, Pawnee Association

Date: May 2, 1855
This certificate (no. 244) is made out to F. L. Crane. On the back was a notation made by Crane, probably at a later date, indicating that he had paid $250 for the share and that A. H. Reeder had intended that Pawnee be the state capital.

Town Share Certificate, Pawnee Association

Date: July 21, 1855
The Pawnee Association issued this certificate for "one share of the town property" to Thomas Sherwood, a business associate of Gov. Reeder's. Sherwood was involved in many of Reeder's land and town share transactions. This printed certificate is more elaborate than the ones issued earlier in the year.
