William A. Hammond, secretary of the Pawnee Town Association, wrote: "Received Fort Leavenworth K. T. November 16th of A. H. Reeder one hundred dollars ($100.00) in full of a payment on his interest in the stock of Pawnee Town Association." This was the first of several such receipts and documents pertaining to transactions in town shares, etc. Shares had been selling for $120 each, with 10 shares equal to an "interest." The contents of several additional receipts are included in the text version of the item.

Expense Sheet, Edmund Jones to H. Hill Jr

This expense sheet, signed by Edmund Jones, was apparently written by Hiram Hill. It includes amounts received by Jones during his oversight of the construction of Hill's house in Lawrence, the amount paid to Jones and Mr. Johnson (the plasterer), and the balance. The last column shows Hill's total expense for materials, labor, and land.

D. A. Clayton, Jr., of Topeka had received and promised to deliver to G. W. and William Hutchinson of Lawrence $134.95 worth of articles: sugar, candles, pepper, mustard, cinnamon, and flour. Under Clayton's signature is a note indicating that the provisions were supplied to "Company B.," which was under the command of H. A. Burgess.

Receipt, John P. Lovell to T. W. Higginson

This receipt was written by John P. Lovell, a manufacturer and dealer of guns and gun materials, for T. W. Higginson, an ardent Northern abolitionist. Higginson was an agent for the Massachusetts Kansas Aid Committee, procuring rifles, powder, cartridges and other materials. The purchases on this receipt totaled $19.95. On the back of the receipt is a note stating that this purchase of twenty rifles was never actually paid, since it was a replacement for a previous shipment of rifles that were defective.

This receipt from B. B. Newton, an agent with the Vermont State Kansas Committee, was made out to Reverend Thomas W. Higginson, who would transport these twenty rifles to the Vermont Colony in Kansas Territory. Higginson was an agent for the Massachusetts Kansas Aid Committee.

Receipt and memorandum concerning weapons and ammunition

This receipt, which provides a detailed listing of revolvers, knives, cartridges, and other weapons and ammunition, declared that these weapons were "received of Chas. Robinson." The following page is a memorandum by Preston Plumb, who writes that he received the weapons and ammunition listed on the receipt in Iowa City, Iowa "on or about the 4th of September 1856." The weapons were to be delivered to J. M. Winchell in Kansas but were to be used for the "defense of Kanzas." Several hundred weapons were involved.

This Kansas State Central Committee receipt book was one of several in which the committee recorded the various monies, provisions, clothing, etc., that were distributed throughout the territory. Many of the items of clothing were specifically listed for children (e.g., "1 girls calico dress" and "1 pair boys woolen pants"), and many items were received by individuals for distribution among the needy of their particular area.

Receipt, N. M'Cracken to William Hutchinson

Unlike most of the other receipts for money or merchandise saved by James Blood for the Kansas State Central Committee, this one was on a pre-printed form and issued by "N'Mcracken" of Leavenworth for merchandise to be delivered to William Hutchinson at Lawrence. It was actually signed by J. F. Morgan, who apparently delivered the goods from Leavenworth to Lawrence and "received pay of J. Blood" on January 26, 1857.

Thomas J. Aliff, one of the free-state prisoners held at Lecompton in the fall of 1856 (see previous document #101288) signed this receipt to Napoleon B. Blanton for "one pair of Drawers" and "one flanel [sic] Shirt." The total cost of these items was indicated as being $3.75.

This receipt, given to Clarina Nichols by her audience in Naples, New York, declares that the thirty-six dollars she received after her speaking engagement was for Thaddeus Hyatt, president of the National Kansas Committee. This receipt and accompanying sales contract documents the purchase of $7113.30 worth of hardware and household items by A.A. Lawrence from John D. Hicks. George Collamore signed the sales contract as witness to the deal. Ingle Barker, of the Mammoth Hardware and Stove Store, was named as the Executor and Administrator of the "goods and chattels" in the name of A.A. Lawrence, and would be responsible for the sale of these goods to settlers in Kansas Territory.
