Ewing, Jr., wrote from Leavenworth to inform his father about 915 acres of land, "near the Kaw river . . . three & a half miles north east of Topeka," that had just been purchased for him. "The land is beautiful & fertile--and is adjacent to fine bodies of timber in the Kansas Valley. The proximity of the land to Topeka (which will be the Capital, of the state) and to the rail road, which will undoubtedly be built in a few years is to be considered in estimating the value of the land." He also mentioned its proximity to the "great military road to Fort Riley."

L.E. Carwell wrote from Boston on the behalf of Thomas Webb, Secretary of the New England Emigrant Aid Society, to James Abbott, regarding travel arrangements for his family. Abbott, along with his wife and children, would depart by train the following Tuesday for Kansas Territory, where they would make their new home.

Letter, Your Mary [Holliday] to My Dear H [Cyrus Kurtz Holliday]

Mary Holliday wrote from Meadville, Pennsylvania to her husband Cyrus K. Holliday in Kansas Territory. This, the second letter he received from her, reported the health of his brother George Holliday's family and mentioned her giving money, earned by selling a locket, to his mother. Mary Holliday eloquently expressed her love and the difficulty of their separation. After joking that her cooking skill should meet Kansas Territory standards, she mentioned the plans of Lowry Trowbridge and George Merriman, Pennsylvanians with Kansas fever.

Kanzas and Nebraska: the History, Geographical, and Physical Characteristics, and Political Position of those Territories; an account of the Emigrant Aid Companies and Directions to Emigrants

This volume is generally accepted as the first book on Kansas. It dealt with Nebraska Territory also. The author, Edward Everett Hale indicated that he had researched the various memoirs and exploration journals of the various white men who had visited the area before its creation as a territory. This research resulted in a narrative history that focused on Native Americans and events in the area prior to 1854. Hale also included information about emigrant aid companies and the volume included some printed letters from emigrant aid company agents. The volume included the charter and "objects" of the Massachusetts Emigrant Aid company, which was organized in March, 1854. Hale also provided some information on the Emigrant Aid Company of New York and Connecticut, which was organized in July, 1854 and the Union Emigration Society. The Appendices include the constitution of the Worcester Co. Kanzas League and a letter from George S. Park describing the Kansas and Smoky Hill river valleys.

Robert Atkins Tovey, Sr., an Englishman traveling to Kansas Territory, wrote to his wife Eliza (Matthew) Tovey, at their home it Albany, New York. Tovey recounted his travel experiences by steamboat and rail. Throughout, he provided detailed scenic descriptions from New York, the Great Lakes, Detroit, Illinois, St. Louis, and the Missouri River. Tovey, coming into contact with slavery on his journey, included brief commentary on the subject.

Letter, Josiah Miller to Father and Mother

Josiah Miller, having arrived in Kansas Territory in August 1854, wrote to his father and mother in South Carolina about their impending journey to Kansas Territory. He offered them various suggestions on what provisions to bring and what routes to take, as they would be making the trip by wagon and not by railroad and boat. Miller also discussed his parents' options regarding land purchase and rent once they arrive in the new territory.

Worcester County Kanzas League promotional brochure

This circular letter was written by Edward E. Hale on behalf of the Worcester County Kanzas League. It was probably affiliated with the New England Emigrant Aid Company as many of the officers are the same. The document provided detailed information about how emigrants would get to Kansasand tips for settling once they got there. He also provided information on how to support the League through the purchase of stock.

Letter, Ellen [Goodnow] to Dear Sister Harriet [Goodnow]

Ellen Goodnow, recently arrived at her homestead near Manhattan, Kansas Territory, wrote to her sister-in-law Harriet Goodnow in New England, regarding her trip West and her impressions of Kansas Territory. Ellen described her journey in a detailed but concise manner, and, in her first impressions, likened Kansas to "another garden of Eden. . .too good for bondage, or for the oppressor's rod [references to slavery]." A devout Christian woman, she also expressed her opinion that Satan held influence over the Missourians. Despite this ominous presence, Ellen still tried to convince Harriet to join them in the Territory.

Letter, C. K. Holliday to My Dear Wife [Holliday]

Date: September 26, 1855 - September 30, 1855
Cyrus K. Holliday wrote twelve pages from Topeka, Kansas Territory to his wife, Mary Holliday, in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Anxious to have her and their young daughter, Lillie, with him, and unable to come for them himself, Cyrus gave detailed business and travel instructions. He suggested that I. H. Lenhart go to New York to exchange their bonds for gold or bills from the State Bank of Missouri. Mary was to keep the money close and beware of thieves. He also gave instructions concerning route, railroads and steamboats, tickets, baggage, and escorts. Cyrus suggested that Mary travel with F. R. Foster of Spring Corners, Pennsylvania or an agent of an Express Company. Her safety and ease during the nine day journey was his main concern. (Mary and Lillie did not join Cyrus in Topeka until March 1857.)

Letter, Hiram Hill to Dear Wife

Date: November 26, 1855
Hiram Hill, a resident of Williamsburgh, Massachusetts wrote to his wife from St. Louis, Missouri, on his way to Lawrence, Kansas Territory, where he owned property. Hill had traveled by railroad and boat and was now a passenger on the steamboat Senora. Ticket prices were high due to the late season. Also on board were Erastus D. Ladd, who was elected to the Topeka free state legislature on March 30th, and Thaddeus L. Whitney, a friend and business associate. Hill also mentioned Mr. Pom[e]roy and Mr. Eldridge. Interestingly, a second letter dated December 20 and perhaps from Hill's wife to her sister-in-law (the wife of Hiram's brother Otis) was written on a blank page.

Letter, T. [Thomas] C. Wells to Mother [Sarah Elizabeth Clarke Wells]

After spending part of much of the winter back East, Wells returned to KT in April 1856, beginning this letter home from aboard the steamer "James H. Lucas" and finishing it on April 13 at Juniata, near Fort Riley. He commented on the trip, by rail and boat, and on the fact that there were "Quite a number of people on board from South Carolina and Georgia going to Kansas." But they would not last long, and "The free state people must eventually conquer--the South cannot compete with the North in sending emigrants." Wells' plans upon his return were to sell his Juniata property and take one close to Manhattan, something he describes having done in a subsequent letter.

J. F. Tallant wrote from Burlington, Iowa to Eli Thayer in Worcester, Massachusetts, seeking Thayer's endorsement of a plan to build a railroad across southern Iowa from Burlington, on the Mississippi River, to a point on the Missouri River. He observed that the federal government recently passed an Iowa land bill donating alternate sections of land to four railroad routes from the Mississippi River to the Missouri River. Tallant maintained that the proposed southern Iowa route would provide an easier route to Kansas for antislavery supporters.

Letter, A. H. Reeder to J. A. Halderman

Date: January 9, 1857
From the National Hotel in Washington, Andrew Reeder wrote to advise Halderman on the disposition of some business matters, especially those related to his Leavenworth lots. He went on to comment on a variety of subjects, including his desire "to return to Kansas in the spring" and to have some long-term impact on the growth and development of Leavenworth. Reeder also mentioned his influence with "some of the men who will probably control the Pacific [Rail] Road when it is built," his desire to help Leavenworth secure the eastern Kansas terminus, and his activity with the National Kansas Committee. Although he had no interest in the rival town of Quindaro, he intended to "help build up" that city if he were not "fairly dealt with" in Leavenworth.

Cyrus Holliday wrote from Meadville, Pennsylvania to Franklin Crane, a prominent citizen in Topeka, Kansas Territory. Holliday discussed his efforts in Washington, D. C., as well as elections, railroads, and the Topeka Bridge. He stated that it was important for the next Kansas delegate to Congress to be from Topeka. This would not only promote the interests of the Topeka community, but it would also improve the status of Crane and Holliday's investments in Topeka.

Letter, Hiram Hill to Dear Brother

Hiram Hill, en route to Kansas Territory, wrote from Jefferson City, Missouri, to his brother back east. Hill reported that the journey so far had been pleasant, though they had been delayed by a train wreck and were currently waiting for a boat to take them up the River. He mentioned his experiences with border ruffians, finding that they were "civil" unless they "get too much whiskey down". Hill lamented the resignation of Kansas Territory's Governor Geary, but related that he saw the new marshal, who was on his way to K.T., in St. Louis.

Albert Morton wrote from Quindaro, Kansas Territory, to Hiram Hill in Massachusetts, concerned that he had not yet received $700 which Hill had recently sent to him. Morton also sought Hill's approval regarding the sale of a town lot with a house on it, the profits from which would be better used, Morton thought, in land investments. He also expressed concern that the railroad decide to pass through Quindaro, fearing that, if it didn't, it would "set things back."

Albert Morton wrote from Quindaro, Kansas Territory, to Hiram Hill in Massachusetts. Morton reported on the status of Samuel N. Simpson, who had left his properties to Charles Robinson, free state leader and fellow founder of the Quindaro Town Company, and left town under suspicion of engaging in deceptive business practices. Another fellow founder of the Town Company, Abelard Guthrie, along with other investors, considered Simpson a "rascil [sic]". Morton also mentioned the progress of the railroad in the area, and the yet to be received package of money.

Writing to his father from Leavenworth, K.T., Thomas Ewing, Jr., described the prospects for "good bargains" in Delaware lands. Marcus Parrott wrote from Leavenworth, Kansas Territory, to his father, Thomas Parrott. Marcus began by telling him of new land sales near Paola, Kansas Territory, the extreme heat they had been having lately, and news about family friends. He spoke about a recent proclamation given by Governor Walker, who had set up camp near Lawrence, which condemned the municipal government in that city as unauthorized. Marcus added that the Free State Convention in Topeka had delegated him as their representative to Congress; he had accepted, despite worries that his private business would suffer because of the appointment.

From Lawrence, Kansas Territory, Marsh wrote his third letter in four days to keep his Massachusetts colleague informed about Gov. Walker's occupation of Lawrence. Marsh, who knew the governor when he was secretary of the treasury under President James K. Polk, had a chance to visit with Walker but found out nothing regarding his current intentions. And the city's residents were "attending to their ordinary affairs as though he were not in their midst"--with some 600 dragoons. Marsh then mentioned, among other things, his visit with G. W. Brown, one of the "hostile chiefs." As with the others, Marsh reportedly emphasized the importance of harmony through the elections and the fact "that their differences was a source of grief to all their friends East, no matter who was right, or who was wrong."

Joseph Trego wrote from Sugar Mound, Kansas Territory, to his wife, Alice, at their family's home in Illinois. Trego described how, since the shelter being built around the mill equipment was not yet complete, the wind and rain interfered with their ability to work. Though the work was hard, he favored the milling business over other means toward income. Trego responded to a newspaper article from the Rock Island Advertiser that his wife had sent him, deeming their coverage of the Kansas troubles "sensational." He expected that Fort Scott would soon be destroyed by free state militiamen, as "Bourbon County Bandits" (proslavery supporters) had been harassing extensively free state supporters in the area. Despite all this disorder, the development prospects of Mound City, in Linn County, appeared favorable.

This letter from Pomeroy to Hyatt was written from the Planters House hotel in Leavenworth on March 6, 1858 (not 1859, as marked) and deals with a variety of subjects, financial and political. Pomeroy began with comments on banking, property, and railroad promotion, and ends with observations about Kansas politics and the Lecompton Constitution, which he believed was finished. "Kansas is as sure to freedom as Plymouth Rock." Even if the proslave constitution passed Congress, all it would do is re-ignite the forces of freedom: "Kansas is safe to the free state party. So don't spend any more time , strength or money about it. The victory is won! . . .The millennium for the free labor interests of the Country will begin in 1860!"

Charles Chadwick wrote from Quindaro, Kansas Territory, to Hiram Hill in Massachusetts, regarding various aspects of town development. Chadwick told Hill of some controversy over his ownership of some lands, both "outside" and in town, which were also being claimed by Wyandotte Indians. He described the potential for new businesses to open in Quindaro, including a machine shop and foundry. Chadwick waited for the arrival of new immigrants and hoped the "eastern capitalists" would introduce more money into their economy. He added his comments about the fraudulent ratification of the Lecompton Constitution, suggesting that the Constitution would do the most good "with the. . .box under the woodpile".

Miss Felt wrote this letter to Thomas Higginson, telling of her journey from Clinton, Massachusetts to Lawrence, Kansas Territory. Apparently, she was emigrating to Kansas in order to teach school. Miss Felt and her party traveled by train until they reached Alton, Illinois, where they took a steamer along the Mississippi to St. Louis. From there they traveled to Jefferson City and finally reached Leavenworth, Kansas Territory. At that point they traveled to Lawrence by stagecoach and Indian canoe. Once she had arrived in Lawrence, which she found to be a pretty town, she became acquainted with James Redpath, R. J. Hinton, Samuel Tappan, and George Stearns. She also called on Ephraim Nute, but she disliked both him and his wife, writing that they "sat up like two icicles." This letter appears to have been edited at some later date.

Agreement concerning the Missouri River and Rocky Mountain Rail Road and the Delaware Nation of Indians

This agreement offered property to John G. Pratt if he was successful in assisting in the adoption of a treaty between the U. S. government and the Delaware's to make lands in the Delaware Reserve available to the Missouri River and Rocky Mountain Rail Road. Pratt was to receive the equivalent of two sections of land--one near the Delaware Mission and one of timber land, a total of 1280 acres, and $5,000 if the treaty was ratified.

Ingalls opened this letter with comments on the weather ("the fine days are so beautiful as to compensate for a large amount of ambiguous weather"), problems with shipping freight, and mention of various items of clothing he had received from the family, but he gave considerable attention to the city of Atchison, its newspaper (Freedom's Champion) and its growth. Sumner compared favorably, as to future prospects, in Ingalls's estimation, with the location of future railroads the key to success. He also encouraged his father to make a spring visit so he could assess for himself "the opportunities for business and the prospects of progress" in this "most important party of the continent."

In this letter to Robert B. Mitchell of Paris in Linn County, Ewing commented on the summer and fall "disturbances in Linn & Bourbon" counties, and he predicted that many of the "scoundrels" responsible--presumably men on both sides of the slavery issue--would one day end up in the as yet to be established "penitentiary." Ewing wrote Mitchell, at that time a member of the territorial legislature, about the organization of the Democratic Party in Leavenworth and reported on several "of our free state friends" who had joined with the "Democracy." (Subsequently, despite Ewing's plea that moderates not take this action but "just bide their time," Mitchell joined the Democrats in 1859 and accepted their nomination for congressman.)

Isaac T. Goodnow wrote from Manhattan, Kansas Territory to Edward Everett Hale, member of the New England Emigrant Aid Company's Executive Committee. Goodnow informed Hale about plans to establish Bluemont Central College (predecessor to Kansas State University) just west of Manhattan, Kansas Territory. He asserted that the college would only add to Manhattan's other advantages -- being on the "natural route of the Pacific" railroad and on the shortest route to the Pike's Peak gold mines. Goodnow asked Hale for a contribution to the building fund for the college.

To day for the first time," and painted a very optimistic picture of Atchison's prosperity and future prospects. The letter was signed, "Your 'fat belly' friend . . ."

Although Thomas Ewing, Jr., was heavily involved the promotion and development of the Leavenworth, Pawnee and Western Railroad Company from his arrival in K.T., this seems to be one of few letter in the letter press books containing fairly substantial reference to those concerns to this date. Here, Ewing wrote E. Peabody of St. Louis regarding a recent company board meeting there in Leavenworth and plans "to connect with the Hannibal & St Jos: rail road, by the shortest & cheapest route to Bucklin or Easton," bypassing Platte City and Plattesburgh.

This letter, sent by Ed Russell to Franklin Crane, a prominent Topeka citizen, concerned the proposed St. Joseph and Topeka Railroad. Russell wanted the railroad to go through his hometown of Elwood, which had been the initial plan. Robinson also takes this opportunity to scold his wife about her attitude toward the people of Lawrence, some of whom she apparently thought were 'aristocratic or exclusive but I know of no one more exclusive than yourself; I do not know whether from pride of Character or circumstance or something else."

Letter, Joseph Denison [to Isaac Goodnow]

Joseph Denison attached this letter to Isaac Goodnow to the end of a longer one written by Isaac's wife Ellen. Denison advised Goodnow to purchase insurance for the college buildings as soon as possible, to prevent a large investment loss. He also suggested that, once the roof of the building was completed, that someone sleep there at night for security reasons. Denison added that the railroad from Wyandotte to Fort Riley now had a stop in Manhattan, complete with depot.

Williams, an official of the Emigrant Aid Company, wrote to Theodore Hyatt of New York from the offices of Glidden & Williams (California Packet Office), Boston, regarding the payment of "$2500 for some lots . . ." which was to cover a note Williams had accepted from S. C. Pomeroy. But Williams also comments on KT politics: "I have been trying to raise $1000, to help Mr. Pomeroy in the Election (December 6?), his chance for the U S Senate, being very good; but he needs a little pecuniary assistance . . ." Pomeroy's election was critical because "he will have great influence on the course of the future Rail Road in Kansas . . . ."

This book by O.B. Gunn, a civil engineer in Wyandotte, provides basic information about Kansas Territory and the living conditions there. The first half outlines statistics about the population, climate, crops, telegraph access, etc. for the use of potential settlers. The second half describes routes to gold mines in Western Kansas Territory and advises the best travel seasons and provisions necessary to make the journey. Includes more than 20 pages of business and trade advertisements, including Gunn's own advertisement on p. 57.

Annual Message of Governor Medary

Governor Medary addressed his annual message to the Council and House of Representatives of Kansas Territory from the executive office in Lecompton, Kansas Territory on January 3, 1860. At this point, the Wyandotte Constitution had been approved and was awaiting action by Congress. Medary outlined a number of issues that the legislature needed to resolve. These included the organization of counties and townships, setting interest rates, public schools, procedures for selling public lands, bank charters, a penitentiary, a territorial library, and railroads. He indicated that he believed a law passed by the last session of the legislature deprived many citizens of the right to vote that that law needed to be changed.

Letter, W. A. Phillips to S. N. Wood

William A. Phillips was snow bound in Salina and wrote to encourage Wood to look after Salina's interests in the legislature. He was especially concerned about the potential effort by men from Junction City to promote their town at the expense of Salina, through the acquisition of "special legislative privileges." Phillips specifically mentioned the development of the "Pikes Peak road"--"I would rather nothing was done with any Pikes Peak road, or stage route this way, unless it is to be controlled by good reliable men, and not a cabal at Junction City." He expressed concern also about legislative actions that would allow a monopoly on bridge building, railroad charters and the location of such roads, and post offices.

Theodore Hyatt of New York wrote this letter to W. F. M. Arny, an agent of the National Kansas Committee and friend of his brother, Thaddeus Hyatt. The main focus of the letter revolved around his brother Thaddeus, who was currently involved in a struggle with the government over whether or not he would testify in court regarding his support of John Brown. Theodore wrote, "I much fear my good brother has an exaggerated conception of the importance of his position." Apparently, he felt that his brother was attempting to make himself a martyr. The letter also included a brief mention of problems with freightage to Atchison and the competition between Atchison and Leavenworth.

Ewing addressed a number of issues in this letter to former territorial Kansas attorney general Andrew J. Isacks (1854-1857), who was in Washington, D.C. presumably lobbying Congress on behalf of Kansas admission, etc., but closed with some interesting comments on Leavenworth's interest in the promotion and development of the Smoky Hill route to the Pikes Peak region. Isacks was one of Ewing's principle partners in the Leavenworth, Pawnee, & Western Railroad venture and was undoubtedly busy lobbying for a railroad land grant from Congress.

Letter, R. S. Stevens to S. N. Wood

R. S. Stevens, a Democratic attorney who had a variety of financial interests in Kansas during the 1850s and 1860s, wrote this letter to Wood from Washington, D.C., where he (Stevens) seemed to be lobbying for a number of concessions for himself and Kansas Territory. Specifically, he wrote of mail routes and "grants for R Rr" [railroads], which would not be forthcoming because of the Republicans who "care[d] nothing about us [Kansas] except so far as political capital can be made." Much of the letter is a condemnation of the Republican Party, which he also wrote was holding up Kansas admission so it could be used against the Democrats, and the final page addressed action, or inaction, with regard to Indian treaties and land.

Theodore Hyatt of New York wrote this letter to Lucy Pomeroy, the wife of S. C. Pomeroy, concerning business affairs and life in Atchison, Kansas Territory. He expressed his hope that the railroad troubles had been resolved, and thanked Mrs. Pomeroy for inviting Theodore Hyatt, Jr. to come visit the Pomeroy family in Kansas. The letter concluded with a brief mention of his brother, Thaddeus Hyatt, who was still imprisoned in Washington Jail. According to Theodore, Thaddeus "appears to enjoy his condition exceedingly" and is feeling better every day.

He favored an extension of the "Platte County road" and subsequent development of the "Leavenworth & Fort Riley road."

A Rev. Charles Reynolds, who wrote to Blood on the 7th and the 10th of September, had raised some $600-$700 in relief money and contacted Powell to ask him to purchase and ship some "winter wheat" to Kansas Territory. Writing from his home in Springfield, Powell indicated that he would do so "with pleasure" but the "best winter wheat" had just been sold. He intended to locate a good supply and ship it by railroad as soon as possible.

Apparently, Theodore had been taking part in some speculation and investing and was not pleased with the results. He wrote that "Kansas would prove the grave-yard of all our earnings and expectations." He also spoke of town lots in Atchison, particularly one lot that he had received from Mr. Fairchild.

Joseph Denison wrote from Cincinatti, Ohio, to Isaac Goodnow, who was also traveling in the East. Denison had been traveling in the Midwest as part of an effort to raise a relief fund for citizens of Kansas Territory, who had suffered as a result of a severe drought. His fellow churchmen and abolitionists were eager to help, as they believed that "the recent Republican victories are due in great part to the settlers and suffers in Kansas" who "must be helped or they will be starved out of the Territory."
