Letter, S. C. Pomeroy to Dear Hyatt [Thaddeus Hyatt]
Authors: Pomeroy, S. C. (Samuel Clarke), 1816-1891
Date: August 6, 1857
Pomeroy again reports to Hyatt from Atchison regarding various issues having to do with their investments in that town--"the Rail Road matter," which went "well," had led Pomeroy to make tentative plans, it seems, to found a town across the river from Atchison on land he already owned to tie to the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad. "If the Rail Road can be put through next season, we can sell [Atchison] lots enough to make such sinners as we are rich as sinners ought to be."

Letter, Chas. Chadwick to Mr. H Hill
Authors: Chadwick, Charles
Date: August 24, 1858
Charles Chadwick wrote from Quindaro, Kansas Territory, to Hiram Hill in Massachusetts, regarding economic conditions in town. Chadwick asked that Hill promptly pay his debt to Abelard Guthrie, a fellow Quindaro investor, who was on the brink of bankruptcy. He added that Clinton County, Missouri, had voted not to invest in the Parkville and Grand River Railroad that fall, which had damaged the possibility for a boom in economic activity for the coming fall. Chadwick reported that heavy rains had hindered transportation on local rivers, but was optimistic that October might bring some money to the town through land sales. No news had been heard from Causin, the Washington attorney who was assisting Hill to retain some disputed lands.

Letter, Samuel C. [Smith] to "Dear Dr." [C. Robinson]
Authors: Smith, Samuel C.
Date: December 7, 1858
In this letter, also from Lawrence, Smith went into some detail about developments with respect to the Delaware lands, apparently connected to a railroad promotion scheme. The Indians "know that [Robert S.] Stevens is connected with the R. R. enterprise and this action of his . . . Has excited their mistrust and caused obstacles to rise in the way of such a treaty as you [Robinson] desire."
