Report of H. J. Strickler, Commissioner to Audit Claims of Citizens of the Territory of Kansas

Jared Chapman submitted this detailed claim (No. 49) for losses of property after he was forced to leave the territory "in fear of my life." Chapman lived in Franklin County. Each claimant had to submit an itemized list and have two witnesses attest to the losses claimed. Even though many of these claims were approved for payment, no funds were ever appropriated or distributed.

Report of H. J. Strickler, Commissioner to Audit Claims of Citizens of the Territory of Kansas

Charles Robinson presented this claim (# 61) for losses suffered at the hands of the "territorial militia and marshal's posse" on May 21, 1856. His list of losses included a frame house, barn, medical library and surgical instruments. He also claimed $10,000 for false imprisonment that was not approved. Each claimant had to submit an itemized list and have two witnesses attest to the losses claimed. Even though many of these claims were approved for payment, no funds were ever appropriated or distributed.

Letter, A. Venard, MD to Thaddeus Hyatt

This letter is from A. Venard, a medical doctor from Pleasant Grove, Kansas Territory who wrote to Thaddeus Hyatt, president of the National Kansas Committee. The letter dealt with the sickness and disease that plagued the settlers along the Verdigris River in southeast Kansas. Dr. Venard had worked diligently to aid the settlers, even using funds from his own pocket to purchase medicine, but he requested that the committee give him 100 dollars worth of drugs. Attached to this letter is an itemized listing of the drugs that he would like to be purchased with those funds.

W.F.M. Arny, agent of the National Kansas Committee, continued to send Thaddeus Hyatt, president of this committee, copies of letters he had received from Kansas settlers. These letters described the economic conditions resulting from the continued drought during 1860. The reports were submitted by Rev. J. W. Fox, Ridgeway, Kansas Territory; the "Committee on the Little Osage," Bourbon County, Kansas Territory; Dr. I. W. Robinson, Manhattan, Kansas Territory; and Joseph M. Todd and others, Greenwood Township, Greenwood County, Kansas Territory.
