The full title of George Walker's pamphlet is "History of Kanzas, also, Information Regarding Routes, Laws, etc, etc". Walker, an Agent and Master of Emigration for the New York Kanzas League, included what he saw as "all the information required by an emigrant to Kanzas; so far, at least, as relates to the situation of the Territory". He also included advice when traveling through slave states, suggesting that "the emigrant should avoid all unnecessary allusion to slavery."

An Act to incorporate the City of Topeka

This act, handwritten by Cyrus K. Holliday, was passed by the territorial legislature at Lecompton on February 14th, 1857. Its three sections established the city limits of Topeka, designated a board of trustees, and secured the city's rights. Fred P. Stanton, Secretary of the Territory of Kansas, certified this copy of the act.

Law Brief, Gaius Jenkins vs. the Robetaille Float, James H. Lane

This law brief was prepared on the behalf of Gaius Jenkins by his attorneys, defending his ownership of land that was also claimed by James Lane. This composition stated that Jenkins settled on his claim during October 1854, while Lane settled next to him in 1855, and that Lane sold Jenkins half of his land shortly thereafter for $800. These points, added to various witness testimonies, show that Jenkins was the rightful owner of the land in dispute. Lane killed Jenkins in June 1858 in an argument over this same matter.

This contract, an agreement made between one party, Lucy Armstrong, William McLaughlin, and Mordecai Bartley, and another, Jacob Moonhouse and Gideon Williams, both Munsee Indians. The body of the document states that the party which includes Lucy Armstrong intends to recover from the United States government sums of money which are owed to the Munsee Indians, as promised to them in treaties of 1805,1839, 1848. In return for obtaining these sums, totaling more than $70,000 for the Munsee Indians, Armstrong and her party would receive 20%.

Lucy Armstrong wrote from Wyandotte, Kansas Territory, to her attorney, Mordecai Bartley, regarding her lawsuit against the U.S. government on behalf of the Munsee Indians. Lucy described a situation in which the survival of the Munsee tribe was threatened by disease and invasion by Missourians. She enclosed with this letter copies of Cornelius Seth's testimony and other documents related to the lawsuit. Armstrong also described 5 agreements made since 1805 by which the Munsee Indians should have received benefits.

This document, directed to the Senate and House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress, described the experience of Margarite Skecket, herself part Osage Indian, who was granted land under a treaty of June 1825. Because she had married, she left that land for that of her husband, a Delaware Indian. Upon his death, she returned to her own land but found that her half-sister had sold it back to the government, having given none of the monetary returns to the land's rightful owner, Skecket herself. This document requested that a law directive be created, which would require Skecket's half-sister to turn over the $1280 to her.

Legal deposition, Daniel Powell vs. Moses Grinter

This is a written transcript of testimony given by Rial Hoisington for a lawsuit, Daniel Powell vs. Moses Grinter. Hoisington and Powell were hired as carpenters to build and repair for Grinter's ferry service. Grinter, a Kentucky man and one of the first white settlers in present-day Wyandotte County, was hired in 1829 to operate the ferry service which crossed the Kansas River, connecting the Delaware Reserve with the Shawnee Reserve. Troops traveling between Forts Leavenworth and Scott sometimes crossed the Kansas River on a ferry operated by Moses Grinter. Grinter married Annie Marshall, a Delaware Indian whose people had been relocated to the Fort Leavenworth Indian Agency in the early 1830s.
