Letter, C. C. Andrews to John A. Halderman, Esq.

From Fort Leavenworth, C. C. Andrews wrote a short letter to inform Halderman that "nothing has transpired" at that location during the past week or so but he was certain "that the territory will be populated with a rapidity unparralleled [sic] in the rise of states." Andrews also was sure that men in the legal profession, such as Andrews himself and Halderman, would do quite well financially.

Letter, Marc [Parrott] to Dear Father [Thomas Parrott]

Date: July 28, 1855
Marcus Parrott, a lawyer and free state man, wrote to his father, Thomas Parrott, from the Shawnee Methodist Mission in Kansas Territory. Marcus told his father of his desire to purchase land and build a home in Leavenworth City, for which he asked his father to send money for lumber. He also mentioned business and referred to his role in the defense of Cole McCrea, a free state man who had killed Malcolm Clark in Leavenworth the past April. Marcus also mentioned his prospect of being nominated as Reporter to the Supreme Court, which he saw as good advertising only.

Account book entries recorded Emery's loss of personal property as a result of July 1856 violence between free state and proslavery advocates. Emery also recorded his expenses for making repairs to his damaged law office.

Letter, Wilson Shannon to John A. Halderman

Date: January 4, 1857
Wilson Shannon, an Ohio Democrat who preceded John W. Geary as governor of KT (August 1856--August 1857) and was considered a proslave partisan, wrote Halderman from Lecompton regarding some legal matters--specifically, "some land warrants" being sent to Halderman in Leavenworth. Obviously, Halderman the attorney was trusted and respected by men on both sides of the political imbroglio.

Legal Document, Power of Attorney to John A. Halderman

Date: April 27, 1857
A. H. Reeder gave his "Power of Attorney" to John A. Halderman, who had served him faithfully in various capacities since 1854, via this notarized, handwritten document dated April 27, 1857. It specifically detailed what this means in terms of the property holdings Reeder had in KT, etc."
