Daily Diaries, Isaac Goodnow

These diaries, written by Isaac Goodnow, described his daily life and his community activities. He settled near Manhattan and was involved in promoting the town and in establishing and promoting Bluemont College, the predecessor to Kansas State University. Many of the entries are somewhat mundane, dealing with weather, illness, neighbors, etc. However, the entries also describe activities in Kansas aimed at making it a free state, as well as the land speculation involved with both towns and farm land.

Date: August 4, 1856
Isaac Goodnow wrote from Rhode Island, as he was traveling on the East Coast, to his wife in Kansas Territory, reporting on his efforts to fundraise for the creation of a college in the Territory. Goodnow thought he should "be able to put the college, through right, by staying East long enough." He made mention of contribution amounts he had garnered already, and was sending the cash home.

Letter, E. D. G. [Ellen Goodnow] to My Dear Sister Harriet [Goodnow]

Date: May 18, 1856
Ellen Goodnow, wife of Isaac Goodnow, wrote to her sister-in-law, Harriet, in New England. In this mostly personal letter, Goodnow reports on the joys and limitations of life in Kansas Territory, stating "I can say truly that I enjoy life as well here as I ever did anywhere." She did not anticipate trouble from border ruffians in their area, as her family's settlement was "too far from Missouri, too near Fort Riley", telling Harriet she would be "enraptured. . .in this country"; Ellen looked forward to a visit from her.

Date: April 15, 1857
Isaac Goodnow wrote from Nebraska City, Nebraska Territory, to his wife Ellen in Kansas Territory. Goodnow was traveling in order to raise money and support for the construction of a college in Manhattan. He was positive about the prospects, but also felt the whole endeavor was an "uphill business." Goodnow thought that, with his friend Joseph Denison as General Financial Agent, the idea would go through.

Letter, Ellen Goodnow to My Dear Husband [Isaac Goodnow]

Date: August 8, 1857
Ellen Goodnow wrote from Shannon, Kansas Territory, to her husband Isaac, who was traveling on the East Coast. In this letter, which is largely personal, Ellen Goodnow describes a frightening conflict between white settlers in the area and members of the Cheyenne Indian tribe. A neighbor had awakened her in the middle of the night to enlist men to fight alongside members of the Delaware Indians, who had also been attacked by the Cheyennes. Isaac's brother, William, had lead her to safety in Mahattan.
