This document outlined the terms of agreement between John Bayless, President of the Highland Town Company, and D.S. Chapson, whom Bayless commissioned the construction of a brick hotel. The contract described the specifications of the building, including its size and materials used, and designated the following March as the hotel's completion date.

An example of numerous like documents collected here, this "tally list" accompanied the official record of voting in the "state election," August 3, 1857, at Geary City in Doniphan County. The 57 voters on the sheets also had the opportunity to vote on the Topeka Constitution.

This one--Geary City, Doniphan County-- is certified by election judges R. J. Porter, John M. Curtis, and Alexander Paterson, and, among the offices tallied, recorded 55 votes for the "State Constitution."

Letter, Geo. Bayless to John Bayless, Esq.

George Bayless wrote to his uncle John Bayless in Kirkwood, New York, regarding the prospect of settling in Highland, Kansas Territory. George stated that he had caught the "Kansas fever", and greatly desired to travel there. However, his studies in medical school kept him behind. George asked his uncle if, in two or three years' time, he might be able to obtain premium office space at a price similar to those at the present time. He added that the "moral and religious regulations" proposed by his uncle made Highland sound especially appealing to him.

Letter, S. M. Irvin to Dear Sir [Gen. John Bayless]

S. M. Irvin, a member of the Highland Town Company, wrote from Highland, Kansas Territory to John Bayless, President of the Company and future Superintendent of Schools in Doniphan County. Irvin discussed different options regarding the development of an "educational company" and seminarian schools. Irvin also looked ahead to other aspects of town development, and stated that it would be advantageous to find a mechanic to buy and run the local mill.
