Letter, R. A. Tovey to My Dear Wife

Date: January 23, 1854
Robert Atkins Tovey, Sr., wrote to his wife, Eliza (Matthew) Tovey, at their home in Albany, New York. Tovey reported that, since the freezing of the Missouri River, mail was slow, and he had lost his job making stove fixings because of the inability to obtain materials from steamboat transport. Tovey also described his friend Swifts' problems maintaining ownership of his land claim, and the prospect that he himself may participate in a new town's development.

An appeal from the merchants of Lawrence, Kansas territory, to the Chamber of Commerce, St. Louis, Mo.

Lawrence merchants appealed to the St. Louis business community to take steps to prevent Missourians from invading Kansas Territory. They based their request on the negative impact that the invasions would have on commerce between Missouri and Kansas Territory.

Letter, T. H. Ellis to Mr. [Thomas N.] Stinson

Date: April 23, 1856
T. H. Ellis reported that he left three plows at Thomas N. Stinson's home and requested that Stinson attempt to sell the plows at prices designated in the letter. Ellis told Stinson that he would receive a commission on the sales.
