Expense Account, Martin Stowell to Worcester Committee

This expense sheet, along with the attached memorandum, was written by Martin Stowell for the Worcester Committee in Massachusetts. Stowell had been functioning as the head of an emigrant company originating out of Massachusetts. The sheet provided a detailed listing of the cash he received as well as the cash he expended. His purchases included various foodstuffs, carpentry tools, cooking and eating utensils, and medicine. He also used some of his money to pay for repairs on wagons, etc. The attached memorandum was addressed to "Dear H" (Thomas Wentworth Higginson). It provided further explanation of the account sheet and gave news from the Massachusetts party.

In this letter, written in Boston, Massachusetts by Thomas Webb, the author stated his concerns about the outcome of the situation in Kansas. He did applaud the efforts of free state settlers to ensure the existence of liberty; however, he felt that not enough New Englanders were serious about keeping slavery out of Kansas Territory.

Letter, R. J. Hinton to Gentlemen [National Kansas Committee]

R. J. Hinton wrote this letter from Lawrence to the members of the National Kansas Committee, offering his suggestions about how to sustain the struggling settlers of Kansas. He proposed the idea of bringing the manufacturing industry into the territory as a source of employment. He also mentioned that a flour mill would be greatly appreciated by Kansans.

Circular, An Appeal for Kansas

This letter was written by Thaddeus Hyatt, president of the National Kansas Committee, to the New York Tribune editor, who printed it in the paper. It was subtitled, "with practical suggestions for its relief." This committee, also known as the Kansas Relief Committee in its early years, sought to send free state settlers into Kansas Territory and to obtain support for Kansas from the Northeast.

Report of a trip to Kansas by W. F. M. Arny

William F. M. Arny was the general agent of the National Kansas Committee. He submitted this report describing the "wants and sufferings" of settlers in Kansas Territory. It included references to border ruffians, land sales, and the suffering in various districts of Kansas. He requested that aid be sent to the Kansas Central Committee.
