This printed certificate for "one share" in the Pawnee Association is made out to Thomas Sherwood and signed by W. R. Montgomery, president, and William A. Hammond, secretary. William R. Montgomery was a colonel in the U.S. Army in command at Fort Riley at the time; Hammond was the post surgeon. The area that was Pawnee is now on Fort Riley.

This certificate granted James Abbott, now of Blanton, Kansas Territory, agency to sell subscriptions to the Kansas Herald of Freedom newspaper. The document was signed and sealed by George W. Brown, publisher and editor of the free state paper.

Town Share Certificate, Pawnee Association

The Pawnee Association issued this certificate for "one share of the town property" to Thomas Sherwood, a business associate of Gov. Reeder's. Sherwood was involved in many of Reeder's land and town share transactions. This printed certificate is more elaborate than the ones issued earlier in the year.

Certificate of appointment of G.W. Brown as agent for the Kansas Executive Committee

Certificate issued by the Free State Executive Committee appointing George Washington Brown, editor of the Herald of Freedom newspaper, as its agent to pursue immediate admission of Kansas as a state under the provisions of the Topeka Constitution. James H. Lane signed the certificate as chairman of the Executive Committee.

Certificate of Service, Franklin L. Crane, Jr.

Franklin L. Crane, Jr., son of a prominent citizen in Topeka, served as a private from November 27 to Dec. 11, 1855 in defense of Lawrence. This certificate of service was signed by several people active in the free state cause, including James H. Lane and Charles Robinson.
