Clothing for Kanzas, Massachusetts State Kanzas Committee

This printed document included three reports of the Massachusetts State Kansas Committee, written by Samuel Cabot concerning the distribution of clothes and packages sent to Kansas. The first report deals with how they were sent and how they kept records of the packages. The report ends with table listing New England communities that sent packages to Kansas. The second report also deals with shipping of packages; it is followed by a brief expense report.

This letter was written by the secretary of the National Kansas Committee, H. B. Hurd, to Theodore Hyatt, whose brother was chairman of this committee. The most noteworthy aspect of the letter is the letterhead, which included a listing of the members of the committee, the executive officers, and their hometowns. It also included the address of their Chicago office.

Letter, James Redpath to Dear Sir [Thomas W. Higginson]

Date: February 5, 1857
James Redpath, a journalist who had spent some time in Kansas, wrote this letter to Thomas Higginson, an abolitionist and agent of the Massachusetts State Kansas Committee. Redpath began the letter with a vehement denouncement of Mr. Cutter, after Mr. Cutter allowed the Missourians to arrest him peacefully. Redpath was appalled that Cutter did not even fire a shot. He was obviously distraught, and he sought advice from Higginson on how he should proceed.

Letter, Thaddeus Hyatt to Dear Sir [Amos Lawrence]

This letter was written from New York by the president of the National Kansas Committee, Thaddeus Hyatt. He was writing to Amos Lawrence about the committee's efforts to relieve the suffering of free state settlers in Kansas Territory. Apparently, a shipment of clothing to Kansas contained a number of articles that were well worn and of little use. Hyatt also spoke of the need for agricultural implements, cattle, and seeds to end the suffering of the settlers.
