William Goodnow wrote from his settlement near Wild Cat Creek, Kansas Territory, to his wife Harriet in New England. Goodnow related his wintertime experiences in the Midwest, which included descriptions of travel and hunting expeditions. He anticipated the prosperity of Manhattan, reporting that "claims that were taken here last spring are now fetching hundreds of dollars advance, & some will soon bring a thousand." Goodnow added that propositions of new bridges, roads, and ferry service would further improve the town.

Writing from Meadville, Pennsylvania, Cyrus Holliday wrote to Franklin Crane concerning the need to make a lithograph of Topeka that could help attract emigrants during the upcoming season. He also felt that Crane was an important asset for the Topeka Association. The rest of the letter dealt with other association business.

Date: January 18, 1857
Cyrus Holliday wrote from Meadville, Pennsylvania to Franklin Crane, a prominent citizen in Topeka, Kansas Territory. Holliday discussed his efforts in Washington, D. C., as well as elections, railroads, and the Topeka Bridge. He stated that it was important for the next Kansas delegate to Congress to be from Topeka. This would not only promote the interests of the Topeka community, but it would also improve the status of Crane and Holliday's investments in Topeka.

Letter, Chas. Chadwick to Hiram Hill

Charles Chadwick wrote from Quindaro, Kansas Territory, to Hiram Hill in Massachusetts. Chadwick told him of Samuel Simpson's return, and the business dealings that resulted from it. It appeared that all investors would get their land as promised. He expressed excitement about the construction of a new bridge, which would "secure [Quindaro's] Supremacy over Wyandotte and Kansas City" for easing trade in the area. Chadwick also mentioned an upcoming election, and asked Hill if he expected many from Massachusetts to emigrate to K.T. this season.

Plan of the Topeka Bridge

This bridge, the first bridge over the Kansas River from Topeka, was built in 1857 through the efforts of the Topeka Association. It was destroyed by wind in 1858 and took several months to rebuild. The diagram is undated.

Letter, Edw.[Edward] Hoogland to Col. [Thomas N.] Stinson

Edward Hoogland, writing from Tecumseh, Kansas Territory to Thomas N. Stinson, expressed his views on the prospects of completing a bridge over the Kansas River at Tecumseh. Hoogland and Stinson had been involved in an unsuccessful venture to finance and build a bridge at Tecumseh since 1857. Hoogland also proposed to Stinson a settlement of a debt that he owed to him for the acquisition of land.

Letter, J. W. Robinson to Dear Friend [Isaac] Goodnow

Date: November 12, 1860
John W. Robinson wrote from his home in Manhattan, Kansas Territory, to Isaac Goodnow. Robinson had given Goodnow agency to sell some of his Manhattan properties, and thanked him for his assistance as he was in great need of money. Robinson enthusiastically reacted to Lincoln's recent election to the Presidency, and claimed "even the Democrats assert that they are gratified at the result." He believed Kansas would be admitted to statehood early in the Legislative session. Robinson also discussed Manhattan's recent development projects, including new roads and a pontoon bridge.
