These certificates for one and two shares in the Susquehanna [Western] Emigration Company entitled the bearers to one-half acre of land per share in the new township, which was to be settled by the Company, in Kansas Territory. Both certificates bear the signature of John Bayless, President of the Susquehanna Emigration Company.

Contract, plat ownership in Highland, Kansas Territory

This contract proposed the annexation of more land to the township of Highland, Kansas Territory, which would cause it to share a boundary with Iowa Indian Reserve lands. The remainder of the document described the conditions of land ownership within the plat, dividing it among seven men, and prohibiting the sale or production of "intoxicating drinks" on all named lands. The contract includes a hand-drawn map of the area discussed.

This blank certificate for one share of stock in the Highland Town Company of Kansas Territory, was signed by John Bayless, President of the Company, and J.P. Johnson, Secretary. Bayless would become the first Superintendent of Schools in Doniphan County.

John Bayless wrote from Kirkwood, Broome County, New York to his daughter, Mrs. C. J. Minion [?] , in Kansas Territory. Bayless encouraged her, assuring her that she would have no regrets about moving to the Territory, despite hardships she might find there. He affirmed that courage and perseverance would "overcome all obstacles", and hoped that she was being regular in her attendance to religious services at the Mission. Bayless also told her he planned to join her in the Territory the coming Spring.
