Account Book for the Topeka Association

Franklin L. Crane was elected chairman of the board of trustees of the Topeka Association in 1856. These pages contain the association's financial accounts as well as an ongoing narrative about town association business. It describes sales and trades of lots, efforts to start businesses and cultural institutions, and the names of people involved in Topeka's early history. Interspersed throughout these accounts of association business are brief mentions of Franklin Crane's personal affairs. Select pages have been chosen from this volume.

Journal of Franklin Loomis Crane

This journal, compiled by Franklin Loomis Crane, details the workings of the Topeka Association during 1856 and 1857. The trustees of the association appointed him chairman and businessman of the association. Some entries are mainly composed of the minutes from town association meetings, while others are listings of those settlers who applied for town lots. Crane also writes of his daily work for the association, including tidbits about the weather, etc.

This cloth bound journal, identified as "Dr. Chas Robinson Account Book, 1856-1866," contains territorial entries for 1856 and 1857 only--entries such as, "S. W. Simpson To Joel Walker For Draft (for the purchase of land)" for $500 and "Notes Receivable // To Sales of Stock // For Thaddeus Hyatt's Note . . . The understanding is that Hyatt shall not receive his certificate for shares until he has put on the Kaw River a Steamboat of 40 tons buthen, worth $5000., and suitable to navigating the Kaw River."

Henry Parker wrote from Lawrence, Kansas Territory, to Hiram Hill in Massachusetts. Parker included a list of accounts paid and received on the first page. He looked forward to Hill's visit to K.T. in the fall, but was afraid he would be disappointed as "everybody has the blues"; the scarcity of money was taking its toll on the community. However, Parker said many new houses were being built, though the builders themselves were paid in town lots or lumber instead of money.
